Smart Farming with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

At PlanetEye Farm AI, we harness the power of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to deliver reliable, field-level agricultural insights—anytime, anywhere. SAR’s unique all-weather, day-and-night imaging capability makes it a game-changer in modern, climate-resilient farming, helping farmers and decision-makers act with confidence even in the face of uncertainty.

What is SAR and Why It Matters for Agriculture

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an advanced satellite-based radar imaging technology that uses microwave signals to capture high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface. Unlike traditional optical imagery, SAR can penetrate clouds, fog, haze, and even rain—making it extremely effective for agricultural monitoring in regions with heavy monsoons, persistent cloud cover, or extreme weather.

By measuring how radar waves interact with crops, soil, and water, SAR reveals vital information about crop conditions, soil moisture, and land use—even when optical satellites can’t see the ground.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Key Applications of SAR in Agriculture

1

Crop Monitoring Across Seasons

From sowing to harvest, SAR tracks structural changes in vegetation over time, enabling monitoring of germination, mid-growth stages, and harvest readiness with remarkable precision. This supports better seasonal planning and real-time advisories for farmers.
2

Soil Moisture Estimation

By detecting variations in surface roughness and dielectric properties, SAR produces accurate soil moisture maps. These maps help optimise irrigation, guide drought management, and improve planning for rain fed farming systems.
3

Crop Type Classification

Different crops reflect radar signals in distinct ways. Our SAR-based models accurately identify crop types, measure acreage, and detect whether land is sown or fallow—helping improve input planning, subsidy management, and policy execution.
4

Flood and Waterlogging Detection

SAR can detect standing water—even beneath dense crop canopies. This enables us to assess flooded areas, measure waterlogging durations, and support post-disaster relief, insurance claims, and recovery planning.
5

Biomass and Yield Estimation

SAR backscatter intensity correlates with crop height, canopy density, and structure. We use these relationships to forecast yields and estimate biomass for crops such as sugarcane, paddy, maize, and cotton, supporting both farm-level and policy-level decision-making.
6

Terrain and Drainage Modelling

Using Interferometric SAR (InSAR), we generate Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) to understand slope, drainage patterns, and watershed characteristics—helping design better irrigation channels, bunds, and water conservation systems.
7

Crop Stress and Anomaly Detection

Rapid changes in SAR backscatter can signal pest infestation, disease outbreaks, or nutrient deficiencies. Our anomaly detection tools flag such areas early, enabling targeted interventions before damage spreads.
8

Land Use and Land Cover Mapping

SAR is ideal for continuous land-use monitoring. We map cropland boundaries, detect encroachments, track land cover changes, and provide compliance support for agricultural regulations.

How PlanetEye Farm AI Uses SAR Differently

We don’t just process SAR images—we transform them into solutions that deliver measurable impact in the field:

  • AI and Machine Learning Optimised for Indian Agriculture – Models trained on local conditions, crop varieties, and seasonal patterns.

Making Agriculture Resilient, One Pixel at a Time

In an era of climate uncertainty, timely, consistent, and accurate agricultural data is not optional—it’s essential. SAR allows us to see through clouds, storms, and darkness to deliver insights that help:

  • Optimise productivity
  • Reduce risk
  • Improve resource efficiency
  • Respond faster to disasters

From monitoring droughts to guiding irrigation schedules, SAR is redefining how agriculture is measured, managed, and protected.

LiDAR in Agriculture:
Redefining Precision Farming for the Future

Our Vision

At PlanetEye Farm AI Limited, we believe that the future of farming lies in the intelligent integration of advanced technologies with age-old agricultural wisdom. Our mission is to empower farmers, agronomists, and agricultural businesses with tools that deliver precise, reliable, and actionable insights.

We are on the cusp of launching our in-house LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) capability — a cutting-edge system that will bring centimeter-level mapping, 3D field intelligence, and unmatched spatial accuracy directly into agricultural decision-making. The hardware is here, the systems are calibrated, the team is trained, and the software pipeline is fully operational. We’re ready for deployment.

What is LiDAR?

LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that uses rapid pulses of laser light to measure distances between the sensor and objects on the ground. By calculating the time it takes for each laser pulse to return, LiDAR creates a highly accurate 3D representation — known as a “point cloud” — of the landscape.

When paired with GPS positioning and advanced analytics, LiDAR can reveal the hidden layers of agricultural fields: the exact slope of the land, the height and density of crops, the micro-contours that guide water flow, and even subtle changes in elevation that may indicate soil erosion.

Unlike satellite imagery or conventional aerial photography, LiDAR penetrates crop canopies, works in low-light conditions, and captures fine details invisible to the human eye.

LiDAR

How LiDAR Works in Agriculture

  1. Laser Pulse Emission – Our LiDAR system emits hundreds of thousands of laser pulses every second from a ground-based, drone-mounted, or vehicle-mounted platform.
  2. Reflection & Capture – The laser pulses bounce back after hitting soil, plants, or structures, and are recorded by the LiDAR sensor.
  3. Distance Calculation – The system measures the time delay between emission and return to determine precise distances.
  4. Data Integration – GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data are combined with the LiDAR measurements
  5. 3D Point Cloud Creation – Billions of measurement points form a dense and accurate 3D model of the agricultural environment
  6. Analysis & Action – The processed data is analyzed to create actionable maps and recommendations for farm management

Our In-House LiDAR Capabilities

Once deployed, our LiDAR service will deliver a range of field intelligence solutions that are not just accurate — they’re transformative.

Ultra-Precise Terrain Mapping

We will produce centimeter-level Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and Digital Surface Models (DSMs) of farmlands. These maps will:

  • Reveal slope gradients, ridges, and micro-contours invisible in standard satellite imagery.
  • Guide irrigation design to prevent waterlogging and ensure uniform distribution.
  • Enable drainage planning to protect crops during heavy rainfall.
  • Support water harvesting projects in rainfed regions by identifying optimal sites for contour bunds, check dams, or percolation tanks.

Soil Erosion & Land Degradation Monitoring

Even minor elevation changes can indicate ongoing soil erosion.

  • Detect early-stage erosion before visible damage occurs.
  • Map erosion hotspots for targeted conservation practices such as terracing, mulching, or planting cover crops.
  • Reduce sediment runoff into rivers and reservoirs, protecting water quality.

Support for Autonomous Agricultural Machinery

Self-driving tractors, harvesters, and drones depend on accurate environmental data.

  • LiDAR maps enable machinery to navigate with precision, avoiding obstacles and optimizing route planning.
  • Improves efficiency in planting, spraying, and harvesting.

Crop Canopy Structure & Health Analysis

LiDAR doesn’t just look at the ground — it measures every layer of vegetation.

  • Map plant height variations to detect underperforming zones.
  • Assess canopy density to understand crop vigor and potential yield.
  • Identify gaps in planting that may require re-sowing or pest management.
  • Support orchard managers in tracking canopy spread for optimal sunlight penetration and pruning schedules.

Precision Input Application

By integrating LiDAR terrain and canopy data with agronomic models, we can:

  • Pinpoint exact areas requiring fertilizer, pesticide, or herbicide application.
  • Reduce chemical use and operational costs.
  • Improve sustainability by minimizing runoff and protecting soil biology.

Orchard & Plantation Management

In perennial crops like mango, pomegranate, citrus, or tea:

  • Map individual trees, measure canopy volume, and assess height.
  • Support pruning, thinning, and planting decisions.
  • Estimate fruit load and optimize harvest timing.
  • Improve airflow and sunlight penetration for healthier crops.
